After noticing a significant oil loss, which seems to be general seepage around the pan and lower engine, and tying this in with my oil pressure guage, which always soars up over the scale on ignition, it seems likely that the oil sytem is over-pressurised, probably due to the oil pressure relief valve being stuck. Any ideas as to where this is located on a 1975 230 manual? How to adjust/reset/fix it?

THANKS!

I have a similar problem(?). My 1989 190E 2.6, 95K miles, almost always pegs the needle at 3 on the oil pressure gauge, and this has me worried. (The gauge goes 0-1-2-3, and its always at 3 when driving.) I haven't noticed any leakage yet, but I've had the car less than a month and I haven't explored everything under the hood yet. Its oil usage is minimal. The only time its not maxed out is when I'm idling at a stop light, and it reads a little above 2.

Is oil pressure supposed to be this high? I know that if it drops to ZERO I'm in big trouble, but having it peg the needle at 3 doesn't seem right, either.

Am I overlooking something? Or do I need to check my Oil Pressure Relief Valve. Thank you to the previous poster who started this thread, I didn't even know this part existed.

Thanks for your feedback! Although I don't have any expertise on the subject, what I have learnt from other forums is that you can attach a mechanical guage to monitor the oil pressure, to verify the accuracy of the oil guage. Good luck with your car; sounds like it should be checked out.

This behavior is typical, and not needing repair. When starting just about any benz, the oil pressure will go high, then as the engine temp warms up it will drop down to readable levels. The ony thing to be concerned about is when it is too LOW. If you have less than 1 bar per 1000 rpm, this is bad.

For oil getting blown out gaskets, check your PCV valve. If the crankcase is not being properly ventilated, the gasses will build up in the carnakcase until they can force their way, along with the case oil, out the weakest gaskets.
