It's a 1990 300E. Two days ago I got in the car in the morning, noticed a horrible stench, almost described as natural gas, rotting, decay. Drove it around, opened the windows let it air out, stench was gone. Later when I got back into the car it was back.
Today I found the source of the smell, under the center console, you have to take off the plastic cover that covers the shifter and window controls etc. It's for sure coming from underneath there, we thought it was the cloth / foam pad but when we took it out and smelled it was fine.
We're out of ideas, the only thing we can think of is a mouse died behind the stereo deck (it's the only place we can't see but the smell is coming from back there. We don't have the proper tool to remove the stereo deck either.
Tomorrow I'm going to a stereo store to have them remove the deck and then i'll get a look back in there, hopefully it's a mouse because if there isnt a mouse or something dead back there, my father and I are OUT OF IDEAS and this is just random and rediculous.
*One thing to note, the stench came on 100%, it didnt gradually get worse.
