Greetings,

I have come across a 1993 S600, which I believe I will purchase.

Seeming very clean and low mileage car.

I do not believe the S 600 model was available in the US in 1993 (from what I am reading, the 600 SEL was availabile (omitting the SL 600). This car was imported from Germany, and it has papers as to the complete conversion to US standards. Please correct me if I am wrong about this.

Questions -

Where can I get information on the 1993 S 600 model?

Anyone have experiences with this model, or European conversions in general?

Will parts be hard to come by in the US, and will I pay a premium for them, along with service?

Other things to look out for?

I'll warn you now. Whether it's a european version or U.S. version, be prepared to dish out ALOT of money to keep it maintained. With it modified to U.S. standards, might also become a huge headache in itself. In fact, right now we have an S600 that came from europe and was modified to U.S. standards. Whoever did the modification BS'ed it and it has exposed wiring everywhere. Thank god I'm not working on it. They guy who is is having serious issues trying to find the proper wiring diagrams to diagnose it.

To be honest, IMHO, unless it's a absolutely smashing deal, AND I MEAN SMASHING, ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE TO REFUSE!!!!!!!!!!, I'd steer away.

Zewerr,

Certainly appreciate your candid opinion... I am wondering if you, or anyone else has any experience with any warranty companies who might cover this type of vehicle? I have a quote from Warranty Direct is is seemingly very, very reasonable, but they also do not seem to cover very much, especially when you take into account their very low life time caps... I have not decided to purchase yet, although I am spending $175 on having a pre purchase inspection at a local mercedes dealer...

Certainly appreciate any and all comments...

Spending the money to have it inspected by someone who knows these cars well before you buy it is probably the best investment you can do for yourself. And having an aftermarket warranty on the car will definately take alot of the strain off the cost of owning the car. Although they do seem to help out in many situations, my opinion with pretty much every aftermarket warranty company out there isn't very good. Every one I seem to do business with seems to be the most stingiest SOB, no matter who your talking to. Maybe someone else has some better experiences with them.

It's a great car. Stay away unless you have lots of excess cash to spend on your car. Love the old 12 cylinder 140's, there's no way in hell I'd own one. Look through the pages here to get a good idea about these things.

140 is one of the remaining best models ever made by MB, the only main problem that you will most certainly encounter is the wiring harness and climate control module, other than that, its a great car to drive and to keep. the harness and the climate control module is a factory defect which MB will never honor.
