We have a 99 e430
the remote door lock control is pathetic as you must be within a few feet
of the car for it to work

Has anyone put in a better system and if so what about the key??

I'd say either your batteries are dead in your remote, or your having antenna issues. If your getting good reception on your radio, it probably isn't the antenna.
