hi.i have read your forum with interest especially in relation to the w140.i recently purchased.a 94 s class.with full service history from day 1.it seems she was well minded.no marks on her inside or outside, to date she has 115000miles.last serviced at 109000miles.is there anything i can expect to go,or should be on the look out for.i noted that a tappet has gone.as she leaks a bit of oil.about a cap full a month or less.i was told that this in not worth fixing for the present,.as there is no sign of wear on the engine. what are these engines good for 250000miles or more if minded? i note as well that they are expensive to maintain.but am i constantly going to have to be fixing things.i only plan to cover about 5000-7000miles a year. what is most likely to go in the next couple of thousand miles,am wondering is she worth keeping or not.
i am just trying to build up a bit more info on that model. i know that they are very well built and are claimed to run for a long time.but am i going to have many electical problems
hope some one can help me on this one,

The engine can probably run pretty close to forever if well taken care of. It's hard to say what will break next on a car that old. It will probably need something most of the time. There are things you can let go for a while and it will still run alright, but it will get expensive down the line. I suppose it all depends on what kind of condition you want the car to stay in. I personally have a weird need to fix everything that starts to go wrong to avoid larger problems later on down the line. Hence, I stick with newer cars as I know what my expenses are going to be at all times. I easily afford a brand new one but don't think I could afford to keep a 140 around (as tempting as it is). It's a rough call. I love the 140's dearly. There is nothing on the road that drives like one. They can also cost a small fortune to keep driving that way. Also, not putting a lot of miles on the car or babying it when you do drive are not necessarily good for the long term well bieing of the car. The most reliable cars I see on a day to day basis are the ones that are driven regularly, avoid a lot of short trips and are driven in a more spirited manner. Good luck with the 140. You are a braver person than I.
cheers for the info. will keep her for a while anyhow, i picked up for about 4000euro. so i can;t go too far wrong on losing much on the dep front.but no way could i afford to pay 2000-3000k a year for things going, but like urself i like to have my cars in top shape, and no doubt small things will be going every now and then. mainly the toys. she is really sort of going into retirement from now on, but will give her plenty of long runs. as the fuel figures can be great. i managed to get about 32-34mpg. on a long run at 55-60mph. my purchase of the w140 has been a dream for many years. so i finally have one.but anyone who can tell me how to sort things myself would be a great help. am i right to think that mercedes dealer service is a bit pricy.
oh yeah can anyone tell me how i can change the light in the centre of the dashboard.i.e the climate control unit. my one is not the digital display.
thanks

Just pop the unit out and there is a slot for the bulb on the underside.
