Hi Everybody,
I have just joined the world of classic Mercedes owners! Tonight a bought a 1978 240D. I was looking to buy an older Benz and this was the first and only one I looked at, but hey, it felt right!
The car has 205k on it, and had been sitting for the past 7 years. I bought it from a really nice guy who had been given the car after the original owner had passed away. It has service documentation going back to it's first oil change, and it showed that the car had 156k in 1988. The car was purchased in Germany and shipped to the US when the buyer was transferred back here. It looks like the "bare bones" model because it has vinyl seats, crank windows, and no AC! However, it does not have flush headlights. Anyway, the thing has a brand new Excide battery, and starts right up. It's also a 4 speed standard. The brakes need some work, and the paint is faded with some rust spots. I don't know the going rate for these models in this year, but the guy was asking $2,800 and I got it for $1,000. I'm having the car towed to my house and I plan on going through the brakes and fluids before it gets driven again. Any advice or direction on how to get this back in shape would be greatly appreciated! I'm good with a wrench and look forward to digging into this thing! Thanks!
