I just had my wagon in the shop to have the ingnition locking mechanism swapped out. Then 2 weeks later, had the AC upgraded to rf134a.
Since I left the shop this last time, the trip odometer and main odometer do not work. The speedometer does. Could this be a simple loose cable or a big expensive job?
Thanks for help.

I should clarify, the odometer worked after the ignition work but did not work after the AC work. That doesn't make sense to me??

The shop also said that resetting the trip odometer, while driving down the road, would break it. If that is the case, what would need repaired?

The shop is correct. The gear may have spun on its shaft. The fix involves taking apart the speedo and delicately making a spline on the shaft with some pliers so the gear does not spin anymore. I have not bothered with mine yet...

Apparently others have used locktite: http://instrument.articles.mbz.org/odo/

KnipKnup:

VDO Odometers are notorious for the slipping of the pot metal gear on the odometer drive shaft. I have found a good page someone has done regarding this, albiet his was in a Porsche. The problem and solution are the same.

Scroll down to the "Odometer Repair" on his page. Here's the link:

I have a page on this on my personal web space too, but mine does not have the notorious pot metal gear. I simply had some chips in the magnet area of the stepper motor.

Hope this helps.
