I heard some hillacious noises the other day near my right front wheel, then had the rear wheels lock up on me. My local Mercedes mechanic is top-notch and he said my transmission is entirely shot. He said he cannot work on it because it needs an updated electronic computer...only the dealer can do it. He thinks it'll cost me $4,000 - $6,000. 8O

Is he close on his estimate? Any words of wisdom? Thank you in advance.

I don't know the prices involved, but that seems a little high to me. I did and internet search and couldn't find prices for a rebuilt Mercedes transmission newer than 1991. But the prices for 91's were about $1500 for the tranny and $250 for the torque converter.

Perhaps the owners of this forum can help. www.importpartsonline.com

If it needs the computer, his estimate may be low. Get a second and then a third opinion, preferably from trained techs. A straight rebuild, if done competently by a price gouging MB dealer may cost as much as $2500, but they'll warrantee the work, and it's less than adding a new computer. Good luck.
