I have a new E 320 which has aclicking noise from the engine. It has been there since new 8 months ago 23k miles and the dealers have now said that the engine needs to be part stripped for Mercedes specialists to look at and it may need a new engine.

Should I be worried?

Anybody else experienced this? :(

Ask them to check the purge valve. These common tick on all models of Mercedes.

i agree with lynn on this one. we add sound deadening and/or replace HUNDREDS of MB purge valves on ALL models. There have not been too many issues with the 211's 112 engine, so i would remain optimistic. worst case scenario, there was a manufacturer's defect and MB will buy you a new engine.

Thanks for this.

Shoulkd the dealer have already checked these when it went in? Perhaps I should check!!

Also does a new engine affect the re-sale value negatively?

Thanks Again

a new engine will not affect the resale value of your vehicle. was the vehicle destined to be a collector's car, yes it probably would. as it is, MB sells more E 320s than about any other vehicle, so they are not considered collectables (save for a few rare examples). please understand that these motors do tick quite a bit and it could be the normal operation of the purge system. if you want, the purge valve is on the far drivers side of the engine and has a little arrow on it with some lines coming in and out. if you can localize the ticking sound to that area then it is indeed your problem. give us an update when you learn more.
