: So, what happened?

Hello all!

It seems as though there has been an upset at [another forum] causing a large number of people to bail out of it. While I welcome the extra traffic for this budding board, I'm trying to understans what went wrong at the other one. It seems that the "off topic" area was rather politically charged, but that is to be expected near election times and "off topic" seems to be the appropriate place for it. I don't want this forum to meet the same fate as [the other one], so can anybody shed some light on the subject?

Now THERE's a can o'worms. In Phaedrus's "Pointing Fingers" thread below, I think he makes a good point that we shouldn't dwell on the subject too much.

If you want the range of forum participants' opinions:

Or directly to the site owner's explanation, which it seems reasonable to take at face value:

Basiclly it was lack of moderation, when someone would get pissed they would usually start throwing insults at the others family and make sladerous accusations.

The good news is those guys won't come over here.

I noticed it was sort of split up.

Very little action here and not a whole lot at the other one either. I'm not much help I suppose, a post here and there. Gone are the days of having a PC at work for me to check/post every few hours. Now I just use it as an excuse to put off studying.

If I had a diesel, I'd probabaly be active over at MBshop since they do mix oil and some politics/current events. I don't know much about oil burners so would have tons of questions. However, no diesel in my future and my gasser rarely gives me trouble.

It seems to have divided along the lines of folks who love political controversy went over yonder, folks who like less stressful chat with some silliness over hear. Most of the political stuff is like what accumulates in an uncleaned fridge--detritus of things past their prime. If something new comes along or a fresh idea I post over there.

I'm sorry that the E board here is about as moribund as elsewhere. Things just don't go wrong often enough that it stays active, I guess.

Ted, someday I will have a 126 SDL. I can feel the force. Then I'll be all over those diesel sites, too. Either that or I'll be waiting for when Narwhal decides he just can't live without the latest M-B and then I'll pick up his E-class diesel like a hand-me-down shirt in a laundry basket. Good thing about his hand-me-downs, he's anal enough that I'l bet the car will last and last. So I wait. Like a vulture. I have patience. "now don't start that again." Trivia quiz, what movie is that from?

Narwhal may sell his diesel someday?

Okay, I'm second in line!!

He's young and wealthy and a lawyer. He has a new kid. He'll be looking for a minivan that can hold a soccer ball and a dog soon. That's when we'll take advantage of him. Kick when he's down, I asy.

Psssst, don't tell anybody. We'll keep this strategy secret.

Sorry guys, it only has 70K on it, not a scratch, and MB Tex. I will probably give it to my 1 year old. Thanks for the kind words though, they had become so few and far between over yonder 8)

Edit: BTW Mr. by product of photosynthesis, I tried to talk you into a diesel, but NO, you replaced the car you lost to progeny with a gasser (which means you'll have to replace it again, b/c its a gasser;)

70K? That' sucker's got one foot in the grave! You need something that baby food can't ruin. Like a Taurus stationwagon, yeah, that's the ticket, a Ford Taurus stationwagon. Morgan Fairchild told me about them. She said they were very nice for lovemaking. I shouldn't tell you anymore.

Drove about 200 mi yesterday in the E300. Ran 85 mph @ 3K rpm. Burned <1/3 of a tank of fuel. Oh, and I got paid mileage and travel time.

Yeah, you and Suginami and PC Dave and Zeitgeist. All of you were absolutely right, too. I even had a good line on a very well-maintained one.

But you know what trumps everything, no matter what? SHE-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed! SHE said she would never trust a car that old (1985 SD). Now I thought to myself (Now's your chance, Ribulose, get the car and she'll never drive it!), but then, what chance would I ever have of hearing the end of it?

So now I wait and dream. One day it will happen. You'll walk behind my new-old car and detect an aroma of fried catfish coming out of the tail pipe, with perhaps a hint of hushpuppies and some fried whole turkey notes lingering in the air.
