cruise control doesn't work

I have a 1996 E300 diesel with 68K miles. Cruise control just stopped working. Is it likely to be the amplifier/module? Where is it physically in the car? Under the dash or the hood?

Do you have any dash lights illuminated e.g. ETS ABS lights?

Have you checked the 15amp. N.2 Fuse ?

Other possibilities are the brake light switch, and another very common Cruise control problem, have you recently fitted new tyres? If the overall wheel diameters are different between front and rear, the CC will stop working.

dash lights are normal. no. 2 fuse is OK. have not changed tires or wheels.

cruise control works fine for about the first 10 minutes of the day, but then stops

Before you start throwing money at the problem it would be a good idea to see if there are any stored DTC error codes.
If your '96 has OBD2, cruise control errors will show up as P0565 through to P0580. If you don't have OBD2, CC error codes are usually accessed from pin 7 of the 38 pin diagnostic socket.
Going back to the brake switch, when the CC stops working try to see a reflection of the rear of the car or ask someone to look if the brake lights are working. In the majority of cases even intermittent CC problems are caused by this switch which fortunately is a very cheap item to replace.

thanks, again, redliner. The way it is acting, I think it is the amp. don't have brake light problems. can you tell me where the amp physically is located in the car? is there a trick to getting it out?

The attached PDF drawings are all I have on the CC of your particular model, you should be able to work out where things are from this.

Don't write off the brake switch just yet though

I am told that the cruise control module or amplifier is on the passenger side -- like behind/under the glove box. Got snowed in this morning and haven't had a chance to look.

Your car is a W210 chassis, correct? If so, the cruise control functions may be tied to the ECU, since I believe these are a "drive-by-wire" diesel management system. Then again, it may still retain a separate cruise amplifier, and I don't know where it resides. On the 124 chassis, it's mounted underneath the instrument cluster, behind the knee bolster.
