I have searched all over and can't seem to find good advise on replacing the starter motor on my 2001 E320 Sedan. I know the motor is bad because the ground cable from the solenoid is broken. I am handy but don't have a lift and heard you have to remove the catalytic converter and many other parts. Is this true?
Thanks Eric. I was able to get it out by first raising the whole car up on ramps then loosening the start cable mounting bracket and then with a floor jack and block of wood (disperse the load) I lifted the engine weight off of the engine mounts without loosening the engine mount bolts (could not get to them). I know this is a little risky putting more pressure on the oil pan. So I only lifted the engine enough until the start slid slide out which is about 1". By the way I have the rear wheel drive model. I here the 4matic is worse.
Thanks again for the reply.
