Invalid "Magazine Empty" Error

Can anyone tell me the problem when I get a message on the display saying my cd magazine is empty?

Is this condition repairable?

If it cannot be fixed the where can I get a new/used cd changer at a reasonable cost? The car is a 1999 C230K with fiber optic wiring.

Thanx,
Bill Baumgardner

I wish someone had replied to you by now, because your problem is very similar to the problem I'm having and is the reason I'm on this site, but I guess no one has any insight.

My problem is that sporadically the changer just forgets that the CD magazine is loaded and I get a "No Magazine" error. If there's anyone out there that can help I would be very appreciative.

I have a similar, but not identical, problem with my changer--I get an "error" message. I was told by the dealer to remove the fuse for the radio/head unit (under the back seat on my car), wait 15 minutes, then reinstall the fuse and re-enter the program code for the radio. This didn't cure my problem ("error" changes to "no magazine"), but you might try it.

Crutchfield has changers for about $300, and they are also sold on eBay. Be careful to get the correct changer, as some use (I believe) an optical connection. I don't want to buy a new changer until I figure out some way to prove my problem is with the changer rather than the car wiring or head unit.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but I ultimately had to change out the unit. The $300 changers are non-optical, and naturally, I have an optical hookup which cost $599. Everything works fine now. As an aside, I temporarily put my old changer in my wfe's ML and got the same error, so I guess its in the unit somewhere.

Gentlemen, my cd changer was exhibiting the same symptoms. The changer would not recognize the cassette. Needed to have it repaired. Please see my post.

The ultimate solution

I have come up with the perfect solution to this problem and it only cost me $50k. I bought a BMW 530i. Unfortunately I just couldn't afford the repair bills on the E320 anymore and it was in the shop more than it was out. Good luck to you all and I hope you find solutions to your issues.

Error message CD changer

The fault is actually inside the CD changer, when one disc is selected the changer moves the gearing inside to slot from one CD to the other.
While this operation is happening the selection arm jams !!
Then giving an error at the radio display..

To fix the problem, disconnect the CD changer from the trunk of the car,
take off the top plastic slide cover,
with a small screwdriver slowly move the gearing so that the CD disc holder will move back to the load - unload position.

Pop out the CD holder.

Replace unit, reconnect the optic and power lead, switch on radio and the unit will work again,

grease the moving parts with light lubricant

Good Luck
