'92 300E 2.6 oil leak and transmission questions

Hi,
I've now been driving my '92 300E 2.6 for about 4 months. It's an incredible car and perfect for my 200 mile round trip every day to work in Atlanta. The only real problem is the car's oil consumption,up to a quart every 1000 miles. I use Amsoil 5W/40 synthetic oil.
I have noticed a small leak at the front right corner of the cylinder head. Am I right in saying this is a sign of head gasket problems? Also oil blows back through the breather tube on top of the valve cover and lies on the top of the air cleaner. Do I need new valve stem oil seals?
The other issue is the transmission does not shift up as smoothly as I would expect in a Mercedes and I have bought a new modulator valve having read that this is a possible cure for this problem. Is it just a matter of installing the new part or is there any kind of adjustment needed to make it work properly?
