Bouncing Temp Gauge

Hello,
I have an 83 300SD Turbo and the temp gauge has never worked correctly. When the car is first started the temp gauge will bounce up and down. It will continue to bounce up and down for about 10-15 mins from just starting the car. The problem does stop after the car has run awhile. I am trying to figure out what would make the gauge bounce, and what remedy can I take to correct it.

Thanks,

There are a number of problems that could cause a bouncing temp gauge including bad connections at either the sensor or the gauge. Also an air bubble in the coolant could give odd readings, or maybe the sensor is just bad.

My electric cooling fan went bad and caused the same problem.
