charcoal smoke

1992 300D Eclass 2.5 turbo....91000 miles....beautiful car....have owned for a year and 8000 trouble free miles...6 weeks ago on a local state highway, purring along just fine, suddenly a 'ton' of grey smoke came billowing from behind the car...home in about a half mile...had it towed to the only MB mechanic in this area who said I needed a new engine. towed back home, called adsit.com about a motor and the engine guy said these engine hardly ever have problems with the bottom end. He said injector problems can mimic a rod knock.(.This MB mechanic did not have any diesels in his shop and did not seem old enough.?) He suggested cracking the injectors...not sure how to do that?..Also, when you look at the fuel line going into the fuel transfer pump on the side of the block it is clean but the hose going to the main filter is dirty. The car is on its second filter change since ownership....Any direction forward sincerely appreciated....Thank you
