Unimog Smoke

Hi everyone, I'm new around here and hoping you outstanding folks can help with my issues...

I have an '87 U1700 Unimog, it was ex army and I suspect it spent many hours idling. Pretty sure the engine is an OM352A (turbo).

It smokes... a lot!. Thick white smoke for a significant time after start. It probably takes a warmup and then 5-10mins of hard driving for the smoke to subside, even then it doesn't fully disappear.

There is a slight blue tint, which I know is oil... but it doesn't appear to burn much.

My personal suspicions are stuck rings and poor compression, I need to check the crankcase blowby.. is there anything else to look at to help diagnose the issue?

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks
