Question for a serious mechanic.... Can a 560sel motor be turned over with a wrench or socket and pullbar to determine if it is "locked up"? Have the opportunity to purchase a 89 with 102k miles on it cheap and 2nd owner says its locked up. He spent 600 on a new starter to no avail but, that means nothing (as I dont know who put it in) or if they even hooked up the wires correctly. Watched a video of someone changing the belts with the radiator out and looks like the alternator shaft nut is available and maybe the crankshaft nut is also. Just asking in case someone knew for sure. Thanks in advance, Joe Ladd
The crank nut is the go-to spot for that, but sometimes you can use a nut elsewhere in the system or even just pull the belt by hand. It just depends on the motor and spot you attempt it, but if not the crank and the pulley spins or belt won't budge then you just don't know for sure. So the crank pulley bolt is what you want, tightening (clockwise) direction only. You may need an extension for your socket since stuff will be in the way, but I just don't know. Just saying be prepared with your tool set.
If the starter is in and working you can typically tell if the motor is locked because you can hear it try, plus the lights dim because it's drawing excessive current when locked. If you hear nothing at all and lights don't dim at all then the starter is not doing anything.
