Hi. I'm brand new here. Bought a used '99 ML430 1.5 years ago, currently with 165,000 miles, and it was a charm, until today. Transmission crapped out, with the tiniest warning. Yesterday, when I put it in reverse, it lurched once. Today, going forward after stopping at a light, it lurched twice. About a mile down the road it went into limp mode. I had to pull over 4 or 5 times, turn it off then on, to get about 2 miles more down the road, to my destination and safety. For the last 50 yards it acted as if nothing was wrong.
Had it towed to my garage. Tow guy tried to drive it onto the bed, but it wouldn't get into gear. Garage said it went backwards when put into drive, and forward when put in reverse. With whatever codes came up (I dont know what they are), they said it needed a new transmission. Estimate with used one with 6 month warranty, labor, etc, is $3500.
My questions are: is there something else that should be looked at? If it is the tranny, is it worth it to fix it at it's age and mileage?
Thank you for any help!
