Computer Diagnostic Equipment

I'm a newbie to this site and I'm wondering if someone has some ideas on where to get computer diagnostic software and wire harness equipment. I have a 1996 E320 which I love, but it seems that this year I've gotten quite a few "check engine" light warnings. Every time I take it in it's like $150 or $180 just to run the diagnostics. Last time it was a $4.50 vacuum hose...so it really burns to spend all that money for a $4.50 part, and to add to that, while they replaced the hose they didn't bother to replace the one running parallel to it which is as brittle as the one they replaced. So I'm thinking maybe it's worth buying my own diagnostic software and wire harness, but I really have no idea what they cost, where to get them, and if they really identify all problems which can come up? Any help out there?

You're probably better off takin the $150 hit when the light comes on than buying a scan tool. A good one that actually tells you what you need to know is expensive!! There is no scan tool out there that will tell you what you need to know to properly fix your car for less than $500-$750 (and thats used!) you cant use the cheapo $100 scan tools on MB
That's why it costs so much to get it checked out, Your mechanic has probably spent upwards of $3000 for that scan tool and he needs to pay for it!!
One other note, if he isn't replacing obviously brittle hoses, maybe that Check engine light coming back on isn't the car but improper diagnosis in the first place. Take your car to a MB specialist if not the dealer.
