Episodic no start E430 1999- Help

Have a 1999 E430.
It has 80,000kms on it. I am second owner.
Basically car “dies” for 10-20 minutes and then starts up again. It normally runs fine and starts easily.
When it is “no start” mode the engine does not crank for 5 minutes, the engine then cranks fine but does not start. After about 15 minutes it cranks and starts fine.
Battery is fine. Have tried other key with same result. Moving selector to neutral did not solve problem.
At other times the car will, while driven, stop and go into “no start mode” for again about 15 minutes. When engine is cold it always starts- problem when it occurs seems to be after engine is run for 20-30 minutes.
Initially I thought it was immobiliser system but if this was defective it would not cause car to stop while running? When running the car dies while at idle.
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks

A faulty crankshaft position sensor commonly causes a car to die after it warms up and will crank/no start until the engine cools off. But it would not cause a no crank/no start situation. The immobilizer would also cause a crank/no start situation. It could also be a bad starter, or battery cables. Did you double check all your battery cable connections, and all your accessible grounds?
