Did I have to replace this rim?

Mercedes-Benz Manhattan noticed one of my rims was "cracked" and told me it had to be replaced. I asked them to leave the old one in my trunk.

Now I acknowledge that it has some scuffs, but that doesn't bother me. Replacing the rim didn't strike me as necessary surgery, but I'm not a technician.

What do you think?

Are there any curbs that were NOT smacked when parking?

My examination did not locate any cracks. Where is the crack? How about a close up image of the crack?

This wheel suffered a rapid pressure loss failure and has been retired.

Yeah, from the pictures, it only looks like alot of cosmetic damage. If there's a crack anywhere, it should be replaced. But if it only had scuff marks and scratches, it would have been fine. It looks like the wheel is bent on the outer bead opposite of the valve stem. Is it cracked on the inside of the rim where the bent point is? If a wheel is bent bad enough, regardless if it's cracked or not, I'd suggest repairing it or replacing. It's really hard to tell how bent a wheel is unless you spin it on the car or on a tire balancer.

If the rim is bent, then the aluminum has fractured, even if the cracks are not visible on both the outside and the inside. It sounds like you now have an expensive paperweight. Mine cost $800 and only had that single defect, no curb rash. How much did that suck?

Close up image of a crack I cant find

"Cracked" was their word. I don't see any cracks; I took pictures of everything that seemed interesting, wondering if those scuffs or the bends on the edges of the rim qualifies as structural damage.

If you guys don't think there's structural damage (e.g. I probably got ripped off) I guess I'll take it to a wheel shop and see if they think it's worth more than paperweight.

heh... in my country noone ever replaces such "cracked" rims. cuz we have a lot of special shops, where proffesional guys repair such rims, it costs around 100$ to repair and repaint 4 rims of 15'' here..

after the repair, it looks like brand new..

first of all sorry for starting up an old thread.
i just bought a 2007 sl, my first mercedes and my first really nice car.
took it for a service a week ago and was told there was a cracked rim.

i was a bit shocked it, I thought i was going to have to pay tops 600 euro for a service, but ended up having to pay 2500 euro for their work.....

they still have the car, as the rim is not available any more. a new rim was 361 euro. mercedes have offered 4 new ones in a design i dont really like for the price of the old, so 361 euro
for four new ones.

i dont really know if it is a good offer or not?
they want to keep all the old rims, to check them for manufacturing faults, i am thinking by saying that they are admitting to a fault and therefore should let me choose which rims i want?

Yeah same here in Finland. It's really rare to actually replace it.
