92 300CE hesitates when accelerating

Hello everyone.

I have a 92 300CE. It's been a good car until this nagging problem.
While accelerating under load it hesitates, sometimes to the extent that I can't pull into traffic.
It will bog down and just "putt-putt".

The last time I tried jumping into traffic, it shut down and wouldn't start.

Once it was towed home it started but would shut down after hitting about 2500-3000 rpm.

Items replaced for that problem:
Fuel Filter
plugs
wires
rotor
Battery
coil (It appears this was the problem)

So now it starts up immediately and accelerates in neutral fine, but still has the original hesitation under load.

Parts replaced relating to this problem:
Crank Position Sensor
O2 Sensor

Tested vacuum. sits around 20 inches, drops and comes back pretty quick when accelerating.

Thanks in advance for any advice,
Barry

I just want to make sure I'm understanding correctly. It was running like crap. You replaced all the things listed. When you replaced the coil, it ran better but still hesitates when you accelerate. Things that might come to mind now, how does the distributor cap look? Any signs of carbon tracing, corroded contacts? Also look around the fuel distributor when it's running. Is there any signs of fuel leaks? Perhaps, maybe you have a plugged catalytic converter. It may flow enough to get good vacuum at idle, but not enough to keep the back pressure down when one the throttle. Another thing, I believe your car has two fuel pumps. If one isn't working, it could still allow the car to run, but starve it for fuel. You can maybe try and listen to see if both are running, or maybe tap on both of the pump casings with the handle of a screw driver, and see if anything changes.

Thanks for the reply Zewerr.

It has been hesitating for awhile now.
I replaced the O2 and CPS sensors.
It still didn't run right. I tried accelerating into traffic and it stalled.
I had it towed home, where it would start but shut down when I hit 2500-3000 rpms.
I replaced the items listed and it seems the coil was the problem.

I will hook a vacuum gauge to it and drive to see if vacuum drops when it is hesitating.
That may tell me if it is a clogged cat.

Hmmm. A plugged converter shouldn't cause the engine to die. You can also kinda tell if your exhaust is plugged when you give it alot of gas and have alot of excess engine noise coming from the intake.
