window lift problem

Have a '93 E300 with a limping window lift on the rear passenger side. If I run it down, it is necessary to manually pull it up while activating the lift button (the glass seems to have parted company from the lift mechanism). I had the same kind of problem years ago with a Pontiac wagon. Was able to remove the door panel and reseat the glass. Have been puzzling the removal of the door panel. Any recommendations or suggestions on how the panel comes off. I have heard that the 'clips' require some muscle, but not sure where they are. Thanks

Exactly same problem to mine about 1 month ago, 1999 E430, I didn't find any guide or info so I spent $200 to hire a tech to fix it, about $100 parts(motor) and the rest labor. He said it was an hour job. Sorry my info limited but hope this helps.

Weihome window solution

Thanks. I do believe that my problem is not a motor. The motor goes, but the glass doesn't. All that I need to do is figure out how the panel is removed and then maybe I can fix it myself.

You need a new regulator. It will cost less to have replaced at a glass shop. Bring the new regulator with you. P.

Regulator - mechanical part or electrical

Since I don't have a really good shop manual, I have no reference for the regulator. Is it a mechanical or electrical unit???

the regulator is a mechanical piece. it is a metal bracket with slides and a pulley on it that converts the spinning of the window motor to an up and down motion that raises and lowers the window. if you are mechanically inclined in the least, it is not a hard job to do. the only special tool you'll need is a rivet gun, as the regulators on MB's are riveted into the door supports. i'm pretty sure the door panel is easy to remove on a 124, but as i'm not totally sure about the process, i will find this info out and post it later on today.

ok, to remove the door panel you must:
1. roll down the window
2. remove the plastic molding from around the door handle. it's easiest to use a wedge to pry it off where the hand grip meets the trim piece.
3. unscrew the hand grip.
4. disconnect the linkage on the handle and slip the unit forward to remove.
5. remove the ashtry housing.
6. remove the border on the door lock.
7. push up on the panel and it should pop off.

to reinstall introduce the panel from above and push down. the screw on the hand grip is microencapsulated, so replace the screw or use lock tite when you screw it back in.

to get the rivets out (if it is indeed the regulator that is causing your problems) hit them in the center with a thin punch to knock the center section out. then drill the rivets out. i find it works best if you apply constant pressur while drilling them and move the drill around a bit.

good luck getting the window functioning properly again.
