:( My 1994 C180 with 120k on the clock has a lazy gearbox. Symptoms are occasionaly won't change up to top gear when engine cold - put your foot down and feels like fuel not getting through. Also when warm seems to hang on a long time before changing up to top gear. At last service I asked (private) garage to test injectors thinking it was fuel feed problem but they said 'lazy gearbox'. The gearbox oil is squeaky clean - garage said gearbox filter cover doesn't look as though it has ever been removed - car had dealer services for first 90k miles? Should I change gearbox oil and filter as a first step? Is there maybe a speed sensor not working properly? Answers on a postcard please!! Andrew

well if i am correct, C180 1994 has a 4-speed automatic transmission, and oil in this gerabox must be changed every 40-50k km. if u are not sure about how long time ago the oil was changed in gerabox, then change it now. and also two filters in gerabox, big and small one.

I agree, change filter and oil is the first thing you do. Blockage in filter reduces flow, which effectively reduces gearshift sensitivity. Transmission oil is usually designed to last for as long as 200,000Km in some cars. However, all cars are different. Toyata Hiace auto model needs filter change every 40,000Km due to debris from clutch band (bad design). Ford falcon 2004 model doesn't need oil change even after 120,000Km.

4 speed automatic uses hydraulic pump body, which controls gear shift. you can imagine oil and filter is important toward effectiveness and efficiency of the hydraulic valves.

All i am trying to say is make sure your oil and filter in good condition for gears to shift well.

If filter and oil are good and new, problem doesn't disappear then the valve body needs recalibration. For which only merc trans manufacturer can help, it is a very specialised job and needs specialised equipment.

From talking to several owners, C180 has occasional issues with auto transmission.
