I replied earlier to the consumer that had "oscillating problems" with their
EClass sedan....late model. The noise sounds like a whrommmm...etc
over and over. Very irritating!!

I am new at this forum but I also have the same problem at speeds from 45mph through 65mph. Short of getting rid of this car, is there any remedies anyone can give that may fix this problem. My mechanic has changed out motor mounts and transmission mountand plans to change out the drive shaft next week. We are running out of ideas as to what may be causing this problem. I have been told by one Mercedes Tech that this is a concurrring problem with this series from 1996 to 2002.

Look forward to hearing from anyone who may have solutions....

Thanx

These noises can be somewhat tough to diagnose, especially when you can not hear the noise in person. Some areas that come to mind if you have not already checked them would be:
1. Wheel Bearing
2. Driveshaft support bearing
3. Harmonic Balancer- If the noise changes as you raise and lower engine rpm, but maintaining constant MPH. This may be something to check anyway, as this engine has experienced problems with the Harmonic Balancer, and this can be devastating if it comes apart.

Hope this helps you find the problem.

I have this same problem with my 99 E 320 , and I drove a friends 98 E 320 with the same problem. I know that my harmonic ballancer needs to be replaiced , and i am letting the car sit untill i get time to get it fixed, thanks to this fourm I checked my harmonic ballancer and noticed the rubber falling out and belt slightly wobbling. Will let you know if the ballancer solves the problem.
