Our 2002 Mercedes C240 is a single owner car and has fairly low mileage at 159K. We had just driven it from Northern California to Yosemite and back over winding mountain roads along I-395. Drove fine.
Shortly after getting back from our trip, 2 malfunctions showed up It was booked for the mechanic and then it died. Crank, no start. Diagnostics initially indicated problems with the camshaft position sensor and oxygen sensor. Once these were replaced, new malfunctions showed up on diagnostics ("like a domino effect").
The mechanic ended up replacing (in a sequential fashion): crankshaft position sensor (Bosch), camshaft position sensor (Hella Engine), Oxygen sensor (Bosch), and fuel pump/filter/Sending unit (Bosch).
The car would start 2 out of 3 times. No apparent malfunction on codes but suggested a problem with ignition. Spark plugs(Bosch)/wires (Bremi)/ignition coils (Karlyn) replaced as this was last done in 2018 at 107K miles. No improvement. Once the engine started, the car ran well on surface streets and highway.
It was then driven to the local Mercedes dealer to see if they could do advanced diagnostics. The car went through the ranks of mechanics to the master mechanic over a 2 month period. The car worsened and wouldn't start. Diagnostics at that time confirmed that the cam position sensor (Hella) was sending faulty codes to the ME control unit.
A factory MB cam position sensor was ordered from Germany and installed. The car starts and runs perfectly now.
This was one of the most difficult problems that the master mechanic had encountered.
I had previously searched Mercedes Benz forums for 'Crank, no start' problems and solutions. I did not find that this problem/solution had been posted.
