I have a 1992 300te with 4matic dirvetrain. This weekend the 4matic warning light on the dash came on. After consulting the owners manual I determined that I shoulnd not drive the car except to the service center and then only with the system in "test" mode.

Am I correct in this assumption?

Is there something that a fairly competent DIY person can attempt to fix?

How much is this likely to cost at the dealer?

Thanks

Charles:

I do not know a lot about the older 4-Matics, other than what I have read in various forums. I would follow the directions in the Owner's Manual. It is my understanding the transfer case in the older 4-Matic has a relatively short life expectancy (70,000 miles). I've heard reports of replacement costs in the $2,800 range. The MBUSA remanufactured transfer cases have gotten good reviews. The owners of these often refer to them as $-Matic's (intentional "Shift" on the "4" key).
