6 speed manual or 5 speed automatic?

Should I order my new 2003 c320 sports coupe (v6 available starting mid Jan. 2003!) with 6 speed or automatic transmission? Planned to order with c7 wheel package option which includes the 20% shorter throw shifter in the six speed format. Don't know if this tweak has improved the overall feel etc? I found the 6 speed manual on the SLK 320 to be rubbery, vague and with long throws. Haven't been able to find a coupe with the c7 option and a manual transmission here in the San Francisco bay area.

I did find the automatic was impressive with its quite shifts.

What's your take?

Thanks,

The shifting quality is greatly improved with the C7's shorter throw. Those who have driven them say it is still not as good as a Honda or BMW. I am happy with it though. It can be slighly difficult to shift into second, especcially when cold. The six speed improves a lot after a few thousand miles. I found the automatic impressive also. But, as long as I can drive a stick, that is what I'll prefer.
I have to admit I would not be very comfortable driving a standard with hills like you've got in San Fransisco, especially when people creep up to your bumper while you're stopped at a light and don't leave you any room to sneeze... :x What's up with that. Things are fairly flat around here so I must admit I prefer the six speed. Sure can be lots of fun :D
My humble opinion? Take the 5 spd Auto and have a ball. Finest transmission (manual or auto) I've ever had. It actually 'picks up the pace' when you do, I.e. drive hard an aggressive, it shifts hard and agressive and holds the right gear. Drive mellow and it is very, very smooth. You can't beat it! :D
