I bought this sedan in 1999 with 60K miles in hopes of running it to 300K miles 8O (naive maybe - but I was a believer in Mercedes quality just on reputation). I have just endured repairs to the front head gasket leaking (the rear was repaired almost 2 years ago) and I've also had the wiring harness replaced in conjunction with the front head gasket work.

Everything else engine/drive train related seems fine and my mechanic (a good friend with 15+ years experience) tells me as much too. He also forewarns that the head gasket issues are likely to re-occur in the next 80-100K miles. I really enjoy this car but don't want to bear the expense on another round of head gasket work. Is there any prospect of the engineering issue on the head gasket being overcome through related technology breakthroughs or is this just the way it is on this particular model? What is your opinion on mileage before another gasket?
