Hi- I have a 98 E300 with about 70K and was wondering what experiences owners have had with battery life. Coming up on my 6th winter and am trying to wait until it just dies or do a pre-emptive replacement. I wish it had a volt gauge, although I guess I could have it tested. For replacements do you suggest OEM or an aftermarket. I realize many variables but just trying to get a feel of what to expect.

I would suggest that if you think the battery is about to go, replace it. 4 years seems to be about the norm. It has been my experience that a weak battery will leave you stranded without any warning whatsover.
As far as replacement, I would go with a DieHard.

I just had MBZ Roadside come visit me at my friends house tonight. Yup, to replace a battery. The old one was 5 years old. I have a 124 body AMG 300CE.

Batteries are time rated. If you buy a 2 year battery it will last 2 years. Same goes for a 3, 4 and 5 year battery. The one I replaced was a 5 year battery.
