I am looking at buying a high milage 180,000 Kms- in Canada-E420.
Am I correct that this engine was changed to 430 a year or so later?
What are the differences in the two engines and any teething problems in this the first of the new 97 model?
My old 300E 1986 burned lots of oil- new valve stem seals solved problem- is this a problem on 420 V8?

I have a 1993 400E. I know this is not related to your question. When you valve seals were replaced, was it necessary for the engine to be removed from the car. I have a similar problem, where i'm burning oil and seeing a lot smoke from the exhaust. Compression is good. The dealership says its necessary to remove the engine. I'm just wondering. This is my only problem. Your help is appreciated.

I would avoid 420 engine.
Not many aftermarket parts for that engine and 430 engine is much superior as far as reliability and performance
