I'm new to this forum and MB's in general. I am currently looking at a 1982 300d for sale. It had the engine replaced at 160,000 miles and has had 170,000 on it since. It also has a new radiator, and exaust system. My question is what should I check for when I go to look at it? It also has a hard time shifting from 3rd to 2nd gear after driving on the highway. Is that going to be expensive to fix, and could I do it myself? I would appriciate and help any information you can give me.
Thanks!

My first impression is to stay away from it, and that is not necessarily the right advice, of course.

If the engine blew up at 160K, I can only imagine what kind of maintenance it had. I don't know much about TRANIS at all, but you may have just described one.

For one thing, check the compression...but I would stay away from that car. How do you know that the engine was replaced and why was it replaced are two questions that I would immediately ask.

You may wish to look at the 126 chassis as well if you have not already.
