Is there a way to get a DAS system and how much would the software and cables cost to do it. I figure every time i go in for some thing it cost 50 dollars to update it.. I had to pay 50 just to tell the radio to recognize the dam cd player that i installed..

Thanks MJ

You have to buy a dealership. No, I'm not kidding. I've heard that the DAS system can be leased by independent shops for $25000/year. Now you know why they charge you everytime they hook it up.
lol

thats impressive 25000 i better just go rob a bank for that huh thats cool i thought it would be like VW about a 1000 but guess not...

I wonder if that will change now...IIRC the independant shops have been lobbying congress for legislation to prevent the MFR's from locking them out 'digitially'. I think that some progress has been made on this...in the independant shops favor. All the better for the average customer.
Since the above post, I have learned that the DAS computer and software can be purchased for $14,000 to $25,000 depending on options. There may be a stiff fee for software upgrades.
In response to earlier complaints, 20 car companies have promised that by January, they'll provide independent garages "the same diagnostic and repair capabilities" that they provide their franchised dealers, for all recent cars and light trucks. Honda and Porsche did not sign the agreement.

Problem is, this is just the diag codes, and its not actually mandatory yet. The bill was being pushed by Sen. Wellstone, and with him deceased the bill may not go much farther.
