My 1983 300D (euro) has a plug coming out the grill which I thought was for heating the oil pan. I am investigating block heaters to help with cold weather starts, and wonder if perhaps that plug IS a block heater already, although I doubt it. If not, how and where do you attach a block heater? Is it a useful item?

I have a 85 300 turbo deisel and the block heat is plugged on the right side of the block where a drain was. It works very well in the winter. I have is set on a lamp timer to activate approx two hours before I start the car, otherwise you will notice a remarkable increase in you electric bill if it is plugged in over night. Anyway the car has stared at 0 degress without hesitation.
