Would a 400i be an insane purchase.

If I found a impeccably serviced example for ~$30K, would summer driving (5k miles/season) kill me financially? I could tolerate a grand a season, anything beyond that would be "annoying" -- achem mainly to my wife.

The 560 has been relatively cheap so far, but then again these tanks don't require $2k tuneups.

I know the 400i is considered sacrelig by some Ferraristas, but I'm just kicking around the idea. Maybe summer '06.

30K is a little high for a 400i, if for some reason you do purchase one they usually have long time ownerhip and can be worked on by a DIY. The BIGGIE is the rear shocks the rebuild on them can be each.

On the plus side resale values are on the rise due to astronomical prices on 12 cylinder Ferraris. Also the transmission is a GM hydromatic so parts are oldsmobile cheap.

The more miles (within reason) on a 400i the better low mile cars are known to need 10K in steering and suspension bushings do to lack of use. The #1 killer of a Ferrari is sitting in a garage.

Also Madison has a very good independent Ferrari garage.

I would think if the car is in tip top shape you could get away with 1K a year in service. $2500 is the rule of thumb for a Ferrari.

Thanks Jeff,

I forgot about the TH-400 trans. A plus from a financial standpoint.

$30k seems to be the high end, then again I like to stick to that adage of buying the most car I can afford.

Another idea is a '91 Porsche 911 Turbo. More civilized than the earlier versions. I don't think the wife could handle a '87 911T!

Which shop in Madison? You probably told me yrs ago, but the name escapes me.

Anyhow, we hope to be out of Madison by early summer '06. Moving to Mpls. (hometown) Abbott-Northwestern hosp will have completed their state of the art cardiac center, so we are looking fwd to that.

I'll make a call da marah for the shop in Madison.

Be honest what whould you rather have for 30K a Porsche or a Ferrari. It seems like a no brainer to me. Ferrari all the way. I see more P-cars than Ford Escorts.

I've never driven a Ferrari, but have driven the 911, 930, 944 and 928. All very rewarding.

The people who live across the street my parents own a Testarossa. Maybe he'll let me test drive it next summer. Not.

Driving a Ferrari is indescribable. I've driven many P-cars and there is absolutly no comparison to Ferrari none zippo nada.

I'm sure have have a few clips on your HD that I sent you.

Thanks Jeff,

I didn't know 400s had self-leveling rear suspensions, probably a few thou for a re-do.

The Mercs aren't cheap in that area either of course. On the 560 it was $900/shock and they're still made! 8O

I may even be the same system as the Merc.

This discussion has a familiar ring to it  (308 vs. Speedster)

Yeah, let's be nice to the P-cars. If "my baby's mama" goes for it, the dearly departed CLK55 may be replaced with an '02 C4S I've been eyeing on my lot recently. I just don't know if I'm officially ready to admit to a mid life crisis. Maybe I'll grow a pony-tail  .

ferrari?

Announcement! I just bought a 1978 911 w/68K black. It has a targa top and black seats. I have driven it since I was a kid. My uncle has owned it since new and was going to give it to his son in law, and tow it to Coral Gables in February. I says, hey man, you already gave him your twin turbo stealth that had 20K on it, a jeep wrangler with less on the clock than that, and a sedan d'ville that was pristine. What about your favorite nephew? I gave him 5K for the car and am told it is worth b/t 13-16K. Any thoughts? He currently has a mondial similar to howie's , a maxed out viper and a c6(?) corvette left to play with.

This sucker has been in a basement garage ( a stable if you will) and has been routinely serviced by Porsche in Charlotte, NC. Uncle gets house calls......

I am pretty pumped and will post pics after he delivers the car! I have never actually had a car like this full-time. When do you guys think would be a good time to tell my wife?

I would have bought a ferarri, but its pretty common knowledge around these parts that I have a lot in common with horses.

edit: seriously, if anyone can provide any useful info about the car, i would like to hear about it. the reason i got into mbshop in the first place is to learn about my diesel, b/c i just don't have the car background you guys have, and don't have the time or desire to research it. thanks!

Haha  it's not the package it's what happens to the package at high rev's. which is one of the main things I like about Ferrari a car that starts to come alive at 6000K

Regarding your wife....one word investment, it worked for me .......twice.

I had a Modena which is MUCH different than a Mondial.

It may be neither, but I thought it looked kind of like yours. Whatever it is, it was $300K in 2002. I'll arsk him.

My wife is cool with stuff like this, but I just bought 2 more boats... 8O

Her problem, is she thinks when you buy a gun/boat/car, you have to get rid of one. Now, we know you just can't do that with guns, and I need boats for different applications. I sold the 'Burban, so I figure I am ok with the car (5K, remember).

edit: for the record, my uncle has more invested in cars than I have in 2 homes. I can't afford a Ferrari.

w126: please don't buy that car. It looks like either a Subaro XT? or an Alfa Romeo, which would be a flattering comment. Can't you get the 308 gts for 30K or so now? Go Magnum!!!!!!
