1995 C220 with low mileage. After filling up with gas, the gas gauge stayed at zero. It eventually returned to full, however it has been intermittent since then. Tapping on the cluster seemed to move it off of empty one time. If it is a gauge problem, can the gauge be replaced. I did a search and it seems to indicate that it is the sending unit.

Some newer cars have the same problem. Your research results appear to be correct based on other posts.

Most of the time the sending unit is the culprit. Should it actually be a problem with the gauge, the whole cluster will have to be replaced, and it will require coding to the vehicle (you would need an SDS from the dealer to complete this).
