Hi, I am new to these boards and I need some help with a stereo problem.

I recently replaced my dead stereo (LCD cracked) in my '97 C230 with an aftermarket Sony deck (with ipod controls, pretty nice) by having it hardwired in. I was told by the stereo installer that this was the only option b/c harnesses for my car were discontinued and it would also sound better.

It sounds great, but the install killed the console lights for the climate control deck above it. The LCD still works and so does the LED A/C red light indicator, but the illumination when you turn the headlamps on no longer works. I was told that this is the standard problem with putting aftermarket decks in and that they cannot fix it.

Does anyone know if this is true, if there is a workaround, or can anyone direct me to a good source of knowledge? This feels fishy.

Thanks!

The CAN data lines (Control Area Network) on MB and BMW for that matter rely on specific voltages and tapping into these lines will cause problems. Aftermarket equipment should never, ever, be fitted to a Benz.
