Hey im new here, and i need some help. I am looking at a couple of mercedes'. One is a 91 300SE with 143k. They want 5400. Also, there is a 84 380SE, with 212k. They want 5400 for that, and it has a rebuilt engine. How do these cars last with that kind of mileage, and what kind of problems are common. Any other info would be appreciated!!! Thanks in advance.

Hi Wes,
Welcome to Benzforum. The 91 300SE is a nice model that will offer a great ride. The bottom end of the 300 engine is extremely durable, however the valve seals on the 300's tend to wear out between 125k and 150k miles, and can actually be replaced without removing the head. There was also some issues with the A/C evaporator leaking on this model, if this happens the dash must be removed to replace the evaporator(Big Bucks).
The 84 380 was also a nice ride, but the resale value has been hurt due to problems with a single row timing chain that was standard on these cars until 1985. The timing chain could be converted to a double row timing chain on earlier model, but is very expensive, unless you are already rebuilding the engine. This may be something you want to ask about. I would go for the 300SE, but I have not seen the cars, and I am probably more concerned about resale value than most people. Again, welcome to Benzforum, and let us know which car you go with.

Saw your posting...

I am looking to purchase a 1989 MErcedes 300TE and I am wondering if you are getting responses. What are people saying.
I have done some research and for the most part... these are supposed to be excellent vehicles.
