Hi Wes,
Welcome to Benzforum. The 91 300SE is a nice model that will offer a great ride. The bottom end of the 300 engine is extremely durable, however the valve seals on the 300's tend to wear out between 125k and 150k miles, and can actually be replaced without removing the head. There was also some issues with the A/C evaporator leaking on this model, if this happens the dash must be removed to replace the evaporator(Big Bucks).
The 84 380 was also a nice ride, but the resale value has been hurt due to problems with a single row timing chain that was standard on these cars until 1985. The timing chain could be converted to a double row timing chain on earlier model, but is very expensive, unless you are already rebuilding the engine. This may be something you want to ask about. I would go for the 300SE, but I have not seen the cars, and I am probably more concerned about resale value than most people. Again, welcome to Benzforum, and let us know which car you go with.
Ken
