Hi Guys,

New to this forum - I have just bought a 1971 280se coupe 3.5 litre - I would love to decode the vin to establish which country it was first registered - does anyone out there know if there is a classic Mercedes vin decoder on line anywhere ?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Naeem.

To decode the VIN number for a 280SE Coupe 3.5, you can follow these steps:
  1. Locate the VIN number: The VIN number for the 280SE Coupe 3.5 can be found on the driver's side of the dashboard, near the windshield. It can also be found on the driver's side door jamb.
  2. Identify the first three digits: The first three digits of the VIN number will identify the manufacturer and location of the assembly plant. For a Mercedes-Benz, the first three digits will always be WDB.
  3. Identify the fourth through eighth digits: The fourth through eighth digits of the VIN number will identify the model, body type, engine size, and transmission type. For the 280SE Coupe 3.5, these digits should be 111.026.
  4. Identify the ninth digit: The ninth digit of the VIN number is a check digit, which is used to verify the authenticity of the VIN.
  5. Identify the tenth digit: The tenth digit of the VIN number will identify the year of the vehicle. For example, if the tenth digit is 3, the vehicle was manufactured in 1973.
  6. Identify the eleventh digit: The eleventh digit of the VIN number will identify the location of the assembly plant.
  7. Identify the twelfth through seventeenth digits: The twelfth through seventeenth digits of the VIN number are unique to each vehicle and are used to identify the specific vehicle.
Overall, the VIN number for a 280SE Coupe 3.5 should follow the format: WDB 111.026 X XXXXXXX.
