newbie questions - oil and manuals

3332 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Bigbenzman
Hey, went to change my oil today and i'm a little stumped. '97 C280 btw, i see the drain on the pan, but where's the filter cartridge located? Also can anyone tell me a good place to purchase a factory manual? On a side note,I'm amazed at the way the mercedes is put together compared to my rover. It's going to be a night and day difference working on these two vehicles.

Thanks,

Al H.

Don't know much about your C280, but try looking for the oil filter on the left (driver's) side of the engine. It may be near the dipstick and under a cover.

As for the manual, it is on a cd-rom. I don't know if i is available for your car yet. I have heard that if you call the Mercedes toll free customer support line, you can get it on microfiche.
Lynn, thanks for the fast reply. I found it after viewing pics of other MB engines on some other website, it's near the firewall next to the intake manifold in case anyone was wondering. Now I need a wrench to fit the cap, anyone have any suggestions? I tried a few generic ones from napa but none seems to fit right. Would benzbin or another online supplier have these?

Thanks,

Al H.
I've seen MB specific filter wrenches at Advance Auto and Autozone. The on-line stores should have them. Even the dealers sell the fairly cheaply.
Al,
Welcome to Benzforum. As Lynn mentioned, the repair manuals on Cd-rom are great if they are available for your car. The oil filter tool is relatively cheap(less than $20) I can get you a quote on the oil filter tool on Monday, if you like. We can also supply you with OEM oil and air filters, as well as many other parts also. Thanks again for joining Benzforum.

Ken, do you own a shop? if there is a web address or phone number just send it to me via email. I'd really be interested in the manuals.

Thanks,

Al H.
Al,
Sorry it took me an extra day to respond to you. Our parts business is relatively new, and we are hoping to have our parts site up within the next week to 10 days. We are taking orders now, and also we are listing a number of items on ebay. Income from our parts business will also help sponsor and maintain this forum. Please keep watching this forum, as we will announce the opening of the parts site. If you have an immediate need, you may email us at [email protected] or contact us on this forum. In regards to your search for a manual on CD-rom, unfortunately, they are not available for the c280 yet. Thanks again for being part of this forum.
