I've heard that Mercedes will be reintroducing diesel vehicles for the 2005 model year in the U.S., and I might be interested in one.

They currently sell these models in the U.K., etc.

Do they still have the legendary quality? Are they long lasting?

Thank you!

I have an ML270CDI - purchased new in Australia 13 months ago that has now travelled 28,000km.

The diesel is proving to be a great engine with abundant torque, excellent economy and well suited to this style of vehicle. It can be a bit noisy under full acceleration but in all other circumstances is 1st class. It is very well matched to the 5 speed auto and has plenty of get up and go. The 1st service was not due until 27,000km so cost of maintenance is proving to be low.

While Australians do not enjoy the price differentiation between petrol and diesel that applies in Europe (i.e. diesel & petrol are priced about the same here), diesel is gaining popularity in Australia - on the ML model, 35% of sales in 2003 were diesels which speaks volumes for the appeal of newer diesels.
