Although my car is an 87 300SDL, I think this question replies to gas engine cars as well.

With my radiator and serpentine belt out of the car for a different repair (another thread), I thought I'd replace the vacuum pump gasket and the front crankshaft seal, since the front of the engine has a fair amount of oil seeming to come from both places.

The specialty tool in the manual (601 589 02 40 00) locks the crankshaft pulley and vibration damper in place so that enough torque can be applied to loosen the bolt. Of course, I don't have this tool. I don't see an easy way to lock down the crank. Any suggestions how to do this without the specialty tool? I'm sure this bolt requires huge torque to get off.
