As noted in an earlier post, this intermittent gas smell was coming from the engine compartment, driver's side. Turns out to have been an occasional fuel leak at the pressure regulator. This is located under the front-most engine cover, and looks like a big bottlecap held on by a clip, and is attached to the horizontal cylinder-shape that delivers (I think) fuel to the injectors.

Not sure why or when the thing would leak; cold weather might have had something to do with it as the service manager said there's an O ring in there, and that the cold sometimes wreaks havoc with them.

At any rate, that was the source of the problem, and as the service guy said, "File that info away for future reference."

Thanks for the replies to the earlier post with suggestions on possible sources. Will post photo of the offending part later for visual reference.
