Hi Everyone,

I'm fairly new to the Benz world as I've just gotten my familys 94 C280 and had some questions.

It's been running fairly warm recently. The temp. gauge would always be in the upper third, so I had it checked out and it was the thermostat that needed replacement. Now when I'm driving it stays around 80 degrees C except when I'm stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. It then creeps up to 100 degrees C. It doesn't really climb down until I can get on the open road which it will drop down back to 80 or sometimes 90. I can hear the fans kick on and off. Should I get something else checked out?

Also I just got back from dinner when the valet must have thrown the shifter really hard because now when I shift the knob feels really loose and there is a clicking noise as I'm shifting. Its an automatic. I don't have any problems when I'm driving it just feels weird when I put it in D and its pretty loose where I can move it around really easily. Any ideas on this?

Last thing is there any pictures of disassembly of the cluster? I need to replace one of the bulbs since the middle part of the cluster is darker than the rest. I hear its not easy, so pictures would help. How much would a shop charge to change it out?

Thanks for your help.

Re: shifter - Maybe the shifter bushing gave out. These are a common wear item. The parts are only a few $$ but dealership labor will cost you big time. If you research on the net, you can find instructions on how to change these out yourself as long as you can jack you car up to get underneath it below the shifter.

Ditto on the the cluster removal. Just do some Googling on the net. Search for Mercedes forums and the like. Then search within those forums for cluster, dash, light replacement, etc. You will find the information you need to do this yourself and make the needed tool. It is another common problem.

If you plan to keep this car, you need to either learn to fix your own car, plan to pay an independent mechanic lots of money, or plan to pay the stealership tons and tons of money.

Thanks for the quick response Doug. Are there any good manuals out there to look at getting? Also any ideas about the heating issue? Today I was driving into work and basically once I started hitting stop and go traffic the temp gauge would go up to around 100 C. If I could cruise a little bit it would drop to around 92 C, but never really lower and would fluctuate back up. Any ideas?

The WIS Mercedes DVDs off of Ebay are probably the source of information for a 280. 5 GB of hard drive space and a pain to install but lots of data for the 6. The Haynes manual would be good to have too although it won't do much in terms of the engine since it mainly covers 4 cyl. models.

You need to search a lot more sites like I said before. It will take some work but you will find good clues about where to start looking for a solution to your temp problem (I have 4 cyl, so I am not much help with a 6).

First, welcome to BenzForum. 8)

I also have a '94 C280 and the temp range you mentioned is the same with my car. I was likewise a little concerned when I first got the car but I now think it is just the way it runs. It is never too high but will get a little on the high side if in stop and go traffic. Once you can pick up speed in the clear it goes back down. I would just keep an eye on it and make sure it does not get too high.

I have had good luck with the ALLDATA do it yourself site. It just takes time to get used to how the info is listed. You can get yearly memberships to full manuals of your car.
