This is the dash on a 1983' 240D.

i was wondering if anyone here knew what that knob the left of the steering wheel does, i asked someone and i was told it was the engine choke, but i'm not sure he knew what he was talking about. hopefully someone here knows something about older models, becuase i'm kindof new to owning a benz :D

Yup, engine choke and idle

FYI -
That's the engine choke/idle control. It controls the engine fuel/air mix, allowing you to lean or enrich the mixture on the fly. It's helpful if you live in areas where your engine may have to work harder some of the time.

A family friend had a '74 300D and that control was handy in the mountains of North Carolina where diesels sometimes had problems with acceleration.
