The dealer tells me it is not possible to get wood trim instead of the standard aluminum-looking stuff on the C230 4-door sport model.

Is this true? I would be willing to pay extra to have the classier looking wood. Perhaps someone in the aftermarket sells it? Or someone on here would offer a trade?

quote from dealer for wood trim

To those interested, Smothers European parts manager was very impressive in putting together the following quote for me to change out the 'carbon fiber' trim in the C-sport models to wood:

I apologize for this response being delayed. As I looked at the C230's in stock, I think I agree with your feelings about the "carbon fiber" look. I looked up all the wood, and it looks like it's in the area of $1700. in parts. The possibility of you doing it yourself depends on your mechanical ability. The wood panels are not just stick on, but involve pulling the old panels off, which is quite involved. Let me know if you are seriously considering it and I can put together a labor quote for you.
I hope it works out for you to get one. They are great cars.
Let me know.
Thank you.

Wood Trim

The material in question is the Textured Aliminum.

I, too, wanted to order the wood instead of this material, but it was not available. The dealership only had information about the adhesive "wood-looking" tape-trim, but nothing further. It was my aim to ask around and find a interior specialist for this purpose, but my wife (who owns the car) said she isn't sure she is willing to take the risk of anything less than top workmanship in the process.

Your posting has been saved to my files. This could change things, perhaps. Thanks.

I suppose you have to buy the C240 or C320 to get the wood trim. It's MBUSA's way to ensure enough people pay more $ for less car (C230k vs 240...). Audi employs the same technique by making wood standard on A4 3.0 and aluminum available only on 1.8T but in the case of Audi, the 3.0 is a lot more car than the 1.8T. I think it was a wise choice for Audi to not bring the 2.4 V6 A4 to US... something MBUSA should have thought about before they introduced C240 and then C230K.

It is interesting to see that MB buyers prefer wood to aluminum. I have an Audi A4, a BMW 325i, and a C230K Coupe and I visit quite a few car forums and most of the time, Audi and BMW owners want to trade wood for metal while MB buyers want to trade metal for wood. Facinating... Plus it doesn't help that MB's aluminum look like it came out of a Hyundai.

"Metal for wood."

Re: ..."Audi and BMW owners want to trade wood for metal while MB buyers want to trade metal for wood."

Yes, this is very interesting indeed. Perhaps because the really nice-looking wood on the upper MB classes truly sets them apart, many MB owners feel they can close the gap a tad in this way. Personally, I like the wood as it adds elegance, while my wife prefers the metal as it is consistent with the "sporting look" the car designers aspire for.

RENNtech and others offer aftermarket "carbon fiber" materials to look the technical part in place of both the metals and wood inserts.

Like you said, interesting...

Christopher.

I'm looking into a wood upgrade as well. It would look so much better with the oyster leather. I think metal interiors on most vehicles look tacky, especially on a BMW or MB. Smacks of the "ricer" community. Audi seems to be better at pulling it off though. Sport on the outside and under the hood, luxury on the inside for me.

$1700 for 3-5 pieces of wood??? You'd have to really despise the aluminum with a passion to drop that amount of money.
